Founded by Edouard Heuer in 1860 at Saint-Imier, in the Swiss Jura, TAG Heuer has now been in the vanguard of Swiss watchmaking for 148 years and is the world's only watch brand to offer wristwatches accurate to the 1/10th, 1/100th and 1/1000th of a second.

From the first patent for a chronograph mechanism in 1882, to the one filed for an oscillating pinion in 1887; and from the timer measuring the 1/100th of a second in 1916 to the first Microtimer accurate to the 1/1000e of a second in 1966, along with the first automatic wristworn chronograph equipped with the Chronomatic Calibre 11, Heuer has written some of the finest chapters in watchmaking history and has made TAG Heuer the inescapable reference brand in motor sports.

In 1985, TAG Heuer became the chronograph of the McLaren team and won several Formula 1 world championships on the wrists of Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. At the same time, it became the official timer of the Formula 1 World Championship, timing to the thousandth of a second, before becoming the official timer of the Indy 500 in 2004, timing to the ten-thousandth of a second—a feat that today remains unequaled. At the Race of Champions in 2006, TAG Heuer measured the smallest margin of victory in the history of world sports—only 2/10,000th of a second in the semi-final.

Through its dynamic partnerships with 2007 Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, Formula 1 superstars Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Bourdais in Champcar, Jeff Gordon in Nascar; and of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes teams in Formula 1 legend, as well as Peugeot Sport and Team Barazi Epislon in the Le Mans 24-hour race and in Endurance, as well as the Mercedes SLR, the world's most powerful and prestigious sports car, TAG Heuer is THE benchmark watch brand in the field of motor racing.

Aside from motor sports, TAG Heuer has strong ties to sailing, in particular the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup since 1967. More recently (in 2005-2007), it partnered China Team, the first Chinese challenger in the history of the America’s Cup. TAG Heuer also has a presence on greens the world over, with Tiger Woods in golf, and on clay courts with Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray in tennis.
